The A10 motorway from Bordeaux to La Rochelle passes through Saintes and Rochefort — two cities worth a brief stop for clients with time. Saintes offers a Roman amphitheatre and the abbey church of Abbaye aux Dames; Rochefort, the former royal arsenal and the Corderie Royale along the Charente river. The scenic route via the coastal marshland of the Marais Poitevin — the "Green Venice" of floating market gardens and willow-lined canals — adds forty minutes but provides a landscape unlike anything on the motorway corridor.
