Forty kilometres southeast of Bordeaux, the Sauternes appellation produces what many regard as the greatest sweet wine in the world, and certainly the most painstakingly created. Château d'Yquem, the appellation's single premier cru supérieur, harvests each grape individually when botrytis concentration is optimal, sometimes sending pickers through the same row multiple times over several weeks. Château d'Yquem | The Visit
Château d'Yquem accepts a limited number of private visitors each year through its appointment system. The visit includes the château interiors, the cellars, and a hosted tasting of two or three vintages: typically anchored around a current release and a mature bottle from the estate's library. The Yquem visit is most rewarding in autumn during or just after harvest, when the botrytised grapes are being picked and the cellar is active. We time visits for this window when clients have flexibility. Off-season visits are quieter and equally informative; the summer visit benefits from the vineyard in full golden foliage.
The Sauternes Appellation | Beyond Yquem
Sauternes contains four other communes, Barsac, Preignac, Bommes, and Fargues, each with classified estates of extraordinary quality. Château Rieussec, Château Suduiraut, Château Climens in Barsac: these are first-growth equivalent estates that receive a fraction of Yquem's visitor attention and consequently offer more intimate visits. Barsac deserves particular mention: its slightly lighter botrytis style, produced on chalky soil rather than the clay-gravel of Sauternes proper, produces wines of extraordinary elegance. Food Pairing | The Sauternes Table
Sauternes is one of the few wines in the world that works as well at the beginning of a meal as at the end: its sweetness, acidity, and viscosity matching foie gras, Roquefort, and langoustine with equal facility. Graves and Pessac-Léognan | The Return Route
The natural return route from Sauternes to Bordeaux passes through the Graves appellation and, closer to the city, through Pessac-Léognan: home to the classified dry white and red estates including Château Haut-Brion and its white wine sibling Château Laville Haut-Brion. For clients with time on the return, a brief stop at Château Haut-Brion's visitor centre can be incorporated into the day.

Sauternes purchased directly at the château, particularly older vintages from estate libraries, requires careful transport. A single bottle of 1990 Château d'Yquem in a hotel room overnight is a risk our team helps clients avoid.
For purchases of case quantities, we arrange direct château-to-négociant transfer with full provenance documentation. International clients receive export paperwork prepared at the estate. Day Structure | Bordeaux to Sauternes and Back
A standard Sauternes day departs central Bordeaux at 09:00, reaches Château d'Yquem for a 10:00 appointment, breaks for lunch at Lafaurie-Peyraguey or a picnic at 13:00, visits a second estate in the afternoon, and returns to Bordeaux by 18:00. Travel time each way is forty-five minutes to one hour depending on traffic.
